( darya ) the son of oakland city councilwoman lynette gibson-mcelhaney was shot and killed sunday morning. 21-year-old victor mcelhaney was studying music at the university of southern california. los angeles police say he was killed in an attempted robbery less than a mile near the campus. police say three to four male suspects approached mcelhaney and one shot him.. the group then fled in a vehicle.. he was taken to the hospital where he later died.. ( darya ) councilwoman mcelhaney released a statement sunday night saying in part "victor was a son of oakland. he was a musician who drew his inspiration from the beat, soul, and sound of the town and he belonged in every nook and cranny of oakland. we are beginning a new chapter in this reoccurring circle of violence...and it will take all of us together to make it through this tragedy."

( james ) happening today.... san francisco mayor london breed is announcing the city's new public defender.( darya ) the appointment comes after the death of long time public defender jeff adachi. kron 4's sara stinson is joining us live from city hall. i'm live at city hall where we're waiting for mayor london breed to announce who she will appoint as the new public defender.the person who will replace the late and longtime jeff adachi who suddenly died last month.adachi was 59 years old and in his fifth term as public defender.when mayor breed found out about his death she said san francisco has lost a dedicated public servant and our communities have lost a champion.everyone in the san francisco public defenders office were shocked to hear about his death, which is still under investigation - but foul play is not suspected at this time.breed hasn't given any hints to us about who she will pick to replace adachi before the november fifth election, but some think she could pick chief deputy public defender matt gonzalez. the 53-year-old is best known for his work defending the undocumented immigrant accused of shooting and killing kate steinle who was walking on the san francisco pier.however - it's still unclear who mayor breed will pick - she will announce adachi's replacement

sheriff's office says the suspect wanted to kill a deputy.. sot: very tense moments there as she had her firearm withdrawn worried that he was going to come forward with an attack.earlier video shows the unidentified man lurking around patrol cruisers. he was peeking into the windows but the vehicles were empty because deputies were patrolling on foot..the man was carrying this golden eight inch blade...a female deputy was alerted and approached the man with her gun drawn..the suspect dropped his knife...then decided not to cooperate and picked it back up..the deputy tried to calm the man while continuing to point her pistol at him.. sot: as things began to escalate she started to descalate. she called for back up. she called for other deputies in the area to come to her assistance...the man turns away from her and heads back toward the cruisers..sgt. ray kelly with the sheriff's office says the man's goal was

suicide by cop..the tense 3 and half minute ordeal ended with other deputies arresting the man without anymore trouble..sot: it takes a lot of courage like this deputy showed she showed her courage today because she stood up there and was not afraid to to confront this man but tried to save his life as well really proud of her and the work that she did. ( james ) the suspect is now facing several charges including criminal threats. the sheriff's office says they're happy deputies were able to de-escalate the situation without any problems. ( james ) just in to our newsroom democrats have chosen milwaukee to host their 2020 national convention. the democratic national committee's decision will take the party to the upper midwest that delivered president trump to the white house. before 2016, republicans hadn't won wisconsin since 1984. ( darya ) now to the south bay. police are looking for the person who is throwing objects at cars near gilroy. it's happened over several months along a stretch of highway 152.... also known as

the pacheco pass highway. authorities say someone has been throwing objects at moving cars. it's happened at least 10 times... and inly at night... however, the most recent incident happened during the day. no one has been seriously injured... but authorities say some victims were hit by the shattered glass. c-h-p is encouraging residents to call right away to report the incident. ( darya ) new this morning. vacaville police say they have finally identified a woman who was found dead back in april of 1991. officials say the woman has been idnetified as cynthia merkley. her body was found in a field where the vacaville premium outlets were being built. until now, police did not know who she was or where she was from. police say she lived in santa cruz and santa rosa. autorities are hoping this new information will lead to figuring out what happened to merkley. morning... bay point firefighters say a cannabis oil explosion at a home sent two people to the hospital and killed 6 animals. it happened last night on sara court .. that's near state highway four in contra costa county. authorities say butane was being forced through marijuana leaves to create the cannabis oil. that's a concentrated form of t-h-c. two people inside the home were treated for smoke inhalation and burns. ( james ) in world news...search operations are underway after an ethiopian airlines flight crashed, killing all 157 on board. the boeing 737 aircraft was en route to nairobi when it lost contact six minutes after taking off sunday. eight americans were among the passengers. seven french and seven british nationals were also on board. the u-n issued a statement saying nineteen u-n staff members were among those killed. ethiopian airlines has decided to ground their fleet of boeing 737 max 8 until further notice. ( james ) the max 8 jet has been involved in two

crashes in less than six months, following october's lion air disaster which killed all 189 people on board.... forcing an investigation for the boeing jets now underway. the aircrafts are the company's bestselling passenger-jet... and officials will be looking at possible correlations between the two. china and ethiopian airlines have grounded all of max-eights until more is known.boeing has presented no evidence to suggest the two disasters are linked. happening today... president trump will reportedly ask for billions of dollars in new border-wall funding. that's according to a white house official ... who says the trump administration is looking to get 5 billion dollars from customs and border protection, and three-point-six billion in military construction funds from the pentagon. in total that's 8-point-6 billion dollars. trump says the wall is needed to stop an "invasion" of illegal immigrants. the president's proposed 20-20 budget calls for nearly three-trillion in spending

have identified the nine-year- old girl whose body was found in a duffel bag last week. the victim's name is trinity love jones. investigators haven't revealed how she died. two persons of interest are being questioned. more facts are expected to be released later this week. ( james ) take a look at this...transportation officials in colorado are triggering avalanches in an effort to manage the slides.

yesterday, the department of transportation tossed 40-pound bombs from helicopters which triggered slides along interstate 70. the goal was to help lessen the danger for drivers below. this comes after more than a week of hundreds of natural and controlled slides that have blocked roads and buried cars. ( darya ) san francisco's streets took a beating in the recent string of storms. public works' pothole-repair crews have been worked through the weekend to patch the city's streets for a safer and smoother ride. they focused on 19th avenue, park presidio boulevard and lombard street. public works fills about 350 potholes during a typical dry month; the number balloons when it rains. this past february, for example, crews filled nearly 18-hundred potholes. bay,. city leaders in san jose have come up with a plan for r-vs parked on the side of roads across the city. the proposal is to create safe parking churches and service organizations -- where people can park and sleep overnight. in addition to taking the r-v's off residential streets ... the plan is to also provide services to the thousands of homeless in need in the city. ( darya ) if a business is interested in allowing people to park in their lots -- all they have to do is register with the city. the city says they expect the ordinance to pass within the coming weeks. new this morning... a strange case from fresno... after a man breaks into a store piano store... not to steal any instruments... but a

mickey mouse stuffed animal. here's angelica lei-lani with the story. a burglary at another fresno business was captured on security video.a suspect is seen breaking a window at the fresno piano gallery, near herndon and blackstone.but the crook left the pianos alone and instead stole a stuffed mickey mouse figure.this all happened early last friday morning, around 2 a.m., but the owner is still in shock that someone would go to this length for what he says is a $25 stuffed animal. in the disturbing surveillance video of the burglary last friday at the fresno piano gallery, you can see a person, smashing open a window with an object.then stealing the mickey mouse off of a $24,000 white yamaha piano. "that's what's so crazy, i sat there in disbelief when i looked at the security camera, because of all the things that could have been taken it was a stuffed animal," says jim fishback, president of the fresno piano gallery.fishback, says moments later, video shows police entering, guns drawn, but no other suspects in sight.photos show the aftermath, lots and lots of glass. "we spent about half a day cleaning the inside of the piano just taking it apart and cleaning all the glass fragments out of it," he says. now four days later, fishback missing the stores beloved mascot of three years."we would put him on different

( darya ) in the east bay. the oakland unified school district is planning layoffs in the wake of the contract agreement with oakland teachers. the board voted monday to cut 22 million dollars from the budget to fulfill the new contract agreement with teachers. the district is planning to lay off more than 100 employees --- but the exact number has not yet been released. school officials must provide notice this month to the employees being laid off. they will take effect at the end of this school year in june. ( darya ) local high school and middle school students from oakland, san francisco, and marin county are planning to walk out of school friday morning to demand urgent action on climate change. they plan

to rally at 10:00 a-m in front of u.s. representative nancy pelosi's office in downtown san francisco. from there they will march past the office of u.s. senator dianne feinstein. the students are calling on both feinstein and pelosi to back the green new deal, as introduced by u.s. representative alexandria ocasio cortez. you may remember last month -- a group of youth activists recently demanded feinstein's support of the green new deal and were initially rejected in an interaction at her san francisco office that went viral. the students are also planning to rally at union square, where speakers will talk about the urgent need for the green new deal. hundreds of similar strikes by youth are planned in an estimated 75 countries. on the peninsula. the loud sound of airplanes may soon be a thing of the past for residents near s-f-o. new technology is being tested right now ... that could create quieter flight paths for airplanes. its called a ground based

( james ) a big story this morning. attorney gloria allred says she has turned over a new video to police ... that appears to show embattled singer r. kelly ... sexually abusing young girls.

tape of what appeared to be r. kelly sexually abusing children.>( james ) allred says her client turned over the old video tape after discovering it in his house. over the weekend r. kelly was released from jail after he was arrested for failure to pay child support. kelly faces 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse in connection to three girls and one woman. the singer has pleaded not guilty. (james) a memorial service was held over the weekend to remember the lives of the women who were killed a year ago at the veterans home in yountville. kron four's philippe djegal was at the service. kerri dorman/vice mayor- "on march 9, 2018, hope and redemption and charity and love did not leave this valley." though the town of yountville is still recovering from the deadly events of march 9th a year ago... rather than dwell on the loss of life... the community honoring the three women who died and their contributions to so many people.kerri dorman/vice mayor- "i'm here because i believe, that the memories we

( darya ) the 11th annual sunday streets in san francisco kicked off in the mission district over the weekend. yesterday, the open street event shut down valencia street to all cars and allowed people to get outdoors and experience the neighborhood. the event transforms an area into a car- free community space for everyone to enjoy. sunday streets started as a mayorial initiative by our current governor gavin newsom back in 2008. this is just one of ten events this year - the next one is march 31st on mission street.31st on mission one is march year - the next one is march 31st on mission street. coming up... we continue to celebrate women's history month.... with actress viola davis... who isn't just a star on the silver screen... but a star in her community.
